The law states:

“The driver of any vehicle knowingly involved in an accident resulting in injury or death to any person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident or as close thereto as possible.”

The statute also requires drivers to remain at the scene until they satisfy other legal duties under New Jersey law.

In simple terms, if you know an accident happened, you generally must stop. You cannot drive away and decide to deal with the problem later.

Even a low-speed collision or parking lot accident can trigger a hit-and-run allegation.
