Driving Without Insurance

New Jersey Statute N.J.S.A. 39:6B-2 dictates that owners and operators of registered motor vehicles must possess liability insurance; minimum amounts of coverage are $15,000 for the injury or death of a person; $30,000 for the injury or death of more than one person; and $5,000 for property damage.

Penalties for Driving Without Insurance

The following are penalties imposed by the State for Driving Without Insurance:

  •  fines of at least $300 and up to $1,000.00
  •  community service
  •  DMV surcharges of $250 for three years
  •  license suspension of one year.

In addition to these penalties there are also court costs and fees that are required to be paid before your driving privileges are reinstated.  New Jersey now  does offer a “hardship” program for individuals convicted of driving without insurance so attorney Leon Matchin will be able to make a hardship application on your behalf so you may keep your license. Please note that the punishment for Driving Without Insurance is often more severe than those associated with a DUI/DWI.
